From my desk

A weekly column series from Steve Payne, Technical Director and Game Development Manager for Football Federation Tasmania.

No. 24 - 30 July, 2010

While still fresh in everyone's mind, may I on behalf of Football Federation Tasmania, once again thank those who helped make Tuesday night's game against the Central Coast Mariners such a fantastic success.

I would also thank all those people who have called and or emailed their supportive comments over the last few days.

Talking of past games I would like to refer back to last Sunday's Tasmania North Under 20 v Tasmania South Under 20 match at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

The fog cleared just in time for everyone to see a good display of possession football by both teams. The southern team ended up winning 6-1 and clearly had a little more depth in their squad, which became more apparent in the second half. That being said, the result was secondary to the game itself.

Both coaches, Nick Lapolla for the south and Mitchell Billing for the north, had been told a couple of weeks beforehand by myself that both teams would play a 1-4-3-3 system with an emphasis on possession football and considering the short notice and little preparation time available both teams did an excellent job at doing just that.

The ball was invariably played out from the back, players keeping possession through midfield up to the strikers. Clearly the southern team had more success, but all credit to the northern boys who kept trying to play.

It was former Nottingham Forest and Derby County manager, the late Brian Clough, who said that if the ball was supposed to be in the air, that's where the grass would be. Great to see our young players keeping the ball on the ground for much of the game.

Also nice to see the Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory doing likewise in the match that followed the under 20s encounter.

I for one had never seen two A-League teams keep the ball on the ground as much as these two sides did in Sunday's encounter and hopefully that is a pattern we will see adopted by all the A-League teams this season.

Next week continues to be busy with the national curriculum Road Show going to Devonport next Wednesday. This is a follow up to the road show event that was held recently in Hobart with Assistant National Technical Director Alistair Edwards.

In Devonport the evening will be conducted by me and Dean May and Michael Edwards, the head coaches for the male and female programmes respectively at Tasmania's National Training Centre.

That Road Show will also go to Launceston on Monday of the following week.

On Sunday, August 8, there is a level one goalkeeping coaches course being conducted by Dean May, details of which are on the Football Federation Tasmania website.

Moving ahead, I hope to schedule both a senior licence course and C licence course.
The senior licence is the last step on the community coaching pathway and the C licence is the first step on the advanced coaching pathway.

Hopefully there will be enough demand from our coaches to get both of these courses off the ground.

The C licence has never been held in Tasmania before.

Details and the cost of the courses will be posted at a later date.
